@pedro alexandre: good suggestion, pedro! i am strongly desiring one of those specialized macro flashes that nikon has; i was afraid that as close as i was, using the 105 mm lens (which is fairly long), the sb-800 flash might cast a shadow on the subject (i did not have my flash stand with me, so going off camera was out of the question). maybe i'll try it next time, though...
